Thermodynamic & DCF Valuation Methodology
The Waste Heat ROI Simulator is an investment-grade pre-feasibility and Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) valuation engine developed by Omega Orionis Oy. It bridges first-law thermodynamic heat pump modeling with corporate Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) capital budgeting to evaluate heat recovery from data centers, industrial cooling loops, and green hydrogen electrolyzers.
1. Thermodynamic Energy Balance & Heat Pump COP
Low-grade waste heat rejected by IT servers (typically 25–45 °C in air-cooled or rear-door heat exchanger systems, and 45–60 °C in direct-to-chip liquid cooling) generally requires temperature upgrading via industrial heat pumps before injection into a district heating network (70–115 °C) or industrial process steam/hot water loop.
By the First Law of Thermodynamics, the total thermal power delivered at the heat pump condenser ($P_{\text{heat}}$) equals the sum of the recovered waste heat absorbed at the evaporator ($P_{\text{IT}}$) and the electrical shaft power consumed by the compressor ($P_{\text{elec}}$):
Since the heating Coefficient of Performance ($\text{COP}$) is defined as the ratio of total thermal output to electrical input ($\text{COP} = P_{\text{heat}} / P_{\text{elec}}$), substituting $P_{\text{heat}}$ yields the exact compressor electrical demand as a function of recoverable IT waste heat:
P_heat (MW) = P_IT * [ COP / (COP - 1) ]
Multiplying by annual equivalent full-load operating hours ($t_{\text{op}}$, up to 8,760 h/yr for baseload data centers) determines the annual electrical energy purchased ($E_{\text{elec}}$) and total thermal energy sold ($E_{\text{heat}}$) in $\text{MWh/yr}$.
2. CAPEX, EBITDA & Operating Cash Flow Structure
Total capital expenditure ($\text{CAPEX}_{\text{total}}$) is scaled linearly against the recoverable IT thermal load ($P_{\text{IT}}$) using a specific investment factor ($\text{Currency/MW}$). This factor encompasses industrial heat pumps, heat exchangers, buffer tanks, piping, electrical switchgear, and district heating substation tie-ins:
Annual pre-tax operating cash flow ($\text{CF}_{\text{annual}}$ / EBITDA) is derived from gross heat offtake revenue minus compressor electricity expenditure and annual scheduled operation & maintenance ($\text{OPEX}$, modeled as a fixed percentage of initial CAPEX):
ElecCost_annual = E_elec (MWh) * Price_elec (Currency/MWh)
OPEX_annual = CAPEX_total * (OPEX_% / 100)
CF_annual = Revenue_annual - ElecCost_annual - OPEX_annual
3. Discounted Cash Flow (NPV & IRR) & Sensitivity Matrix
To support institutional capital allocation, the simulator computes both undiscounted metrics (Simple Payback Period and Simple Annual ROI) and time-value-adjusted metrics over the technical lifecycle ($N$ years, typically 15–25 years) using the organization's Weighted Average Cost of Capital ($\text{WACC}$, $r$):
NPV = -CAPEX_total + Σ [ CF_annual / (1 + r)^t ] for t = 1 ... N
0 = -CAPEX_total + Σ [ CF_annual / (1 + IRR)^t ] (solved numerically via bisection)
Because spark-spread risk (the ratio between electricity input price and heat offtake tariff) is the primary commercial risk driver in heat pump projects, the simulator automatically computes a 3x3 Price Sensitivity Matrix evaluating simultaneous $\pm 15\%$ price shifts across both commodities.
4. ESG & Displaced Carbon Emissions Accounting
Supplying recovered heat into a municipal heating grid or industrial facility displaces incumbent fossil or biomass combustion. Annual avoided greenhouse gas emissions ($\text{tCO}_2/\text{yr}$) are calculated by multiplying the total thermal output ($E_{\text{heat}}$) by the displaced heat carbon intensity factor ($f_{\text{CO2}}$ in $\text{kg CO}_2/\text{MWh}$):
Note: For strict GHG Protocol Scope 2/3 compliance, users operating on non-renewable power grids may subtract the grid emission factor of compressor electricity from the displaced thermal emission factor when entering the net carbon intensity parameter.
